Fortunately, our facility has a sophisticated Neurotrac MyoPlus 4 pro device. The device has the functions of EMG, EMS and TENS. As a result, the tool can form not only part of the evaluation process but the treatment process too.
EMG stands for Electromyography: The device can tell us how well you can use your muscles during specific actions. This can be particularly important following a musculoskeletal injury, spinal cord injury, surgery or if you have a specific condition which may affect the muscles (i.e., multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease). EMG is not only used as part of evaluations but also provides a unique Biofeedback tool during exercise therapy sessions. While performing specific movements the device provides a clearer picture of how your muscles function. As a result, it can help monitor your progress during the exercise therapy process and guide any changes that may be needed for your treatment plan
EMS stands for electro-muscle stimulation. The device can be used to stimulate your muscles which can assist with building lean muscle mass, muscle strengthening and even reduce the rate of muscle loss with certain conditions. EMS can implemented during exercise therapy sessions to target key muscles identified to be weak or where muscle mass has been lost. As a result, EMS can help speed up the recovery process.
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The device can produce electrical impulses to the skin via electrodes that are stuck on the skin. When these electrical impulses are delivered to an affected area they can reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain. Subsequently, it can reduce the pain you may be experiencing and relax your muscles. TENS can stimulate the production of endorphins which are natural painkillers for the body. This function is important so that you can continue to perform your exercise therapy with little to no pain.
